Early diagnosis of kidney dysfunction protects your heart, blood vessels, and vital organs. Routine eGFR and hydration checks save kidneys.

Clinical Basis

The 2021 CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) creatinine equation is the international gold standard for estimating glomerular filtration rate without race coefficients. It calculates the volume of blood your kidneys filter every minute per 1.73 m² of body surface area.

Reference Guidelines

  • Stage 1 (eGFR ≥ 90): Normal or high kidney filtration rate. Kidney function is healthy unless proteinuria/structural damage is present.
  • Stage 2 (eGFR 60–89): Mildly decreased filtration. Common with natural aging; monitor blood pressure, hydration, and diabetes markers annually.
  • Stage 3a (eGFR 45–59): Mild-to-moderate loss of kidney function. Regular monitoring by a nephrologist or urologist is strongly recommended.
  • Stage 3b (eGFR 30–44): Moderate-to-severe loss of kidney function. Medication adjustment, strict BP control (<130/80), and dietary reviews needed.
  • Stage 4 (eGFR 15–29): Severely decreased kidney function. Specialist renal management required to prevent further decline.
  • Stage 5 (eGFR < 15): Kidney failure / End-stage renal disease (ESRD). Urgent nephrology consultation for renal replacement therapy (dialysis or transplant evaluation).
